30 Day Song Challenge

30 Day Song ChallengeI suppose I’ve decided to do this thing where you choose a song a day.

Go ahead and click through to check out my 30 picks.

Day 1 – A song you like with a color in the title
Hiroshi Yoshimura – Green

I’m already cheating because this is an album not a song, but at least there is also a song on the album called “Green”. It’s a classic, naturalistic ambient album that’s calm and doesn’t ask too much of the listener, but is still interesting enough to listen to many times over.

Day 2 – A song you like with a number in the title
Soundgarden – 4th of July

My grandma died on the 4th of July, 3 days after my 18th birthday, and I remember driving around town listening to this song a lot. Your 18th is a dividing line in almost everyone’s life, but mine even more so for obvious reasons. Before that year, my parents and I went together to the same place in the park to watch fireworks. That night, neither of them wanted to go, and things were never really the same again.

Day 3 – A song that reminds you of summertime
Pearl Jam – MFC

4th of July does, for obvious reasons. But I think reusing one already would be cheating. This is a song from about the same time in my life – a couple of months later, about to go away to college for the first time. Spoilers: it didn’t go very well. So this song reminds me of that entire debacle. Probably not what is meant by “a song that reminds you of summertime”, but it’s the best I can think of right now.

Day 4 – A song that reminds you of someone you’d rather forget
Sloan – Coax Me

Day 5 – A song that needs to be played loud
Perturbator – Tained Empire

Yup. Crank it.

Day 6 – A song that makes you want to dance
Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime

There is no such thing. I literally have never danced in my life. I’m listing this song because I’m willing to do the arm chop dance thing if necessary, to fulfill the list requirement.

Day 7 – A song to drive to
DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist – Product Placement

The obvious answer is Radar Love by Golden Earring. So I’m subverting that with this instead. A great album to make the time disappear when you’re driving down a boring road.

Day 8 – A song about drugs or alcohol
The Streets – Blinded by the Lights

This song’s “about” drugs, but it’s not really about drugs. You know.

Day 9 – A song that makes you happy

Does anything “make” me happy? Doubt it. This is a good video though.

Day 10 – A song that makes you sad
Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy

Day 11 – A song you never get tired of
Pink Floyd – Dogs

Day 12 – A song from your preteen years
Weird Al Yankovic – Dare To Be Stupid

I didn’t really listen to much music in my preteen years. You had to actually buy music in those days – or listen to the radio. And my parents didn’t listen to music ever. So here’s one I remember listening to. Though I couldn’t tell you how I found Weird Al. This is one of the first albums (cassette) I ever bought.

Day 13 – A song you like from the 70s
Kraftwerk – The Robots

Kraftwerk invented electronic music, dude. No, really. No, really.

Day 14 – A song you’d love to be played at your wedding
The Fiery Furnaces – Single Again

Day 15 – A song you like that’s a cover by another artist
Chromatics – Into the Black

Day 16 – A song that’s a classic favorite
Offspring – It’ll Be a Long Time

Day 17 – A song you’d sing a duet with someone on karaoke
Where Are You Tonight

Day 18 – A song from the year you were born
AC/DC – Hells Bells

Day 19 – A song that makes you think about life
Hannah Miller – Leaving

Day 20 – A song that has many meanings to you
They Might Be Giants – Purple Toupee

Day 21 – A song you like with a person’s name in the title
Atom and His Package – Pumping Iron For Enya

Day 22 – A song that moves you forward
Bad Religion – Portrait of Authority

Day 23 – A song you think everybody should listen to
John Cage – In the Name of the Holocaust

Day 24 – A song by a band you wish were still together
The Union Underground – Revolution Man

Day 25 – A song you like by an artist no longer living
Audioslave – Like a Stone

Day 26 – A song that makes you want to fall in love
Devo – Girl U Want

Day 27 – A song that breaks your heart
Thom Yorke – Harrowdown Hill

Day 28 – A song by an artist whose voice you love
Maki Nomiya – Baby Universe

Day 29 – A song you remember from your childhood
U Really Got A Hold On Me

Day 30 – A song that reminds you of yourself
Pearl Jam – Not For You
